The Butterfly Hillstream Loach is a peaceful and uniquely patterned freshwater fish, prized for its flattened, disk-like body and intricate markings. Native to the fast-flowing rivers and streams of China, this species is well-suited for aquariums with strong water flow and plenty of surface area for grazing. Its natural algae-grazing behavior and fascinating appearance make it a favorite for aquarists.
- Size: 2-3 inches
- Lifespan: 5-8 years
- Temperament: Peaceful, social
- Group/Solitary: Best kept in groups of 3+
- Food: Omnivorous; biofilm, algae, sinking wafers, blanched vegetables, live/frozen foods (bloodworms, daphnia)
- Water Requirements: 68-75°F, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard water, high oxygen levels
Butterfly Hillstream Loaches inhabit cool, oxygen-rich streams with rocky substrates and fast-moving water. To replicate this environment in an aquarium, strong water flow is essential, achieved with powerheads or high-flow filters. A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended for a small group, with smooth rocks, driftwood, and plants providing hiding spots and surfaces for biofilm growth. A sandy or fine gravel substrate prevents damage to their delicate undersides.
These loaches feed primarily on algae and biofilm, but in captivity, they benefit from supplemental foods. Sinking algae wafers, blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini, and occasional live or frozen foods such as bloodworms or daphnia are ideal. Allowing algae to grow on rocks and decorations creates a natural feeding environment for them.
Butterfly Hillstream Loaches are peaceful and thrive in groups of three or more, where they display fascinating social behaviors. They are compatible with other cool-water, non-aggressive species such as danios, small rasboras, and shrimp. Stable water parameters and regular water changes are essential to their health, as they are sensitive to poor water quality.
Fun Fact: The Butterfly Hillstream Loach’s suction-cup-like fins allow it to cling to rocks and surfaces in strong currents, making it perfectly adapted to its fast-flowing natural habitat. This ability, coupled with its intricate patterns, makes it both functional and visually captivating in aquariums.
