The Corydoras is a hardy and peaceful bottom-dwelling fish, often selected for community aquariums due to its active and social nature. A color variation of the Peppered Cory (Corydoras paleatus), the albino variety has a striking white to pale pink body with red eyes, making it a unique and visually appealing addition to a tank. These fish are native to slow-moving waters in South America, including Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay.

- Size: 2-2.5 inches
- Lifespan: 5-8 years
- Temperament: Peaceful, social
- Group/Solitary: Best kept in groups of 4-6+
- Food: Omnivorous, sinking pellets, live/frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp)
- Water Requirements: 72-78°F, pH 6.0-8.0, soft to moderately hard water

Corys are ideal for beginners because of their hardy nature and tolerance for a range of water conditions. These fish thrive in groups and should always be kept in schools of at least four to six to encourage natural behavior and reduce stress. A soft substrate, like sand, is preferred to protect their sensitive barbels as they scavenge along the tank bottom for food. A well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots, such as caves or driftwood, helps them feel secure, though they are active and visible throughout the day. Their diet should consist of high-quality sinking pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms or brine shrimp to keep them healthy and enhance their coloration. Regular water changes and a stable environment will ensure they thrive over the long term.

In their native South America, Corydoras inhabit cool, slow-moving rivers and floodplains where they sift through the substrate for food. Although the albino variety is not found in the wild, it shares the same behavioral traits and tank requirements as its natural-colored counterpart. These fish are peaceful and can be kept with other similarly calm species, making them a great fit for community tanks.

Fun Fact: Corydoras have a unique ability to gulp air from the water’s surface and use their intestines to absorb oxygen, a trait developed in the wild where oxygen levels in the water may fluctuate.
