Care Instructions
Hymenochirus curtipes thrives in calm, heavily vegetated, shallow water habitats in the wild. In aquariums, they prefer setups with soft, sandy substrates to protect their sensitive skin and feet. A minimum tank size of 10 gallons is ideal for a small group. Providing live plants, driftwood, and small caves creates hiding spots and encourages natural behaviors. Low water flow is important, as they are not strong swimmers.
These frogs are carnivorous and require a diet of protein-rich foods. Offer a variety of live or frozen options, including bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Specialized sinking pellets can supplement their diet, but feeding them in a quiet area of the tank ensures they can compete for food, as they are slow feeders.
Western Dwarf Clawed Frogs are peaceful and best kept in species-specific tanks or with small, non-aggressive fish. Avoid housing them with larger or fast-swimming species that may outcompete them for food. These frogs are fully aquatic and occasionally surface for air, so a secure tank lid is necessary to prevent escapes. Regular water changes and stable parameters are essential to their health.
Fun Fact: Hymenochirus curtipes has a unique hunting style, using its sensitive webbed fingers to detect and grab food particles from the substrate, a behavior that adds to its charm in the aquarium.
