Anubias barteri "Broadleaf" is a robust freshwater aquarium plant known for its large, deep green leaves and ease of care. Found in the rivers and streams of West Africa, particularly in Cameroon and Nigeria, this plant thrives in shaded, slow-moving waters. Its adaptability to various conditions and resistance to herbivorous fish make it a favorite among aquarists for both low-tech and high-tech aquariums.

  • Type: Rhizome plant
  • Size: 6-12 inches tall, 6-10 inches wide
  • Light: Low to moderate (6-8 hours daily)
  • Substrate: Not required; attach to rocks, driftwood, or other hardscape
  • CO2: Not necessary but may enhance growth
  • Water Requirements: 72-82°F, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard water
  • Growth Rate: Slow

In the wild, Anubias barteri "Broadleaf" grows along the banks of rivers and streams, often partially submerged. It anchors itself to rocks, wood, or other surfaces, thriving in the nutrient-rich waters of shaded, tropical environments. In aquariums, it should be attached to similar hardscape elements to prevent the rhizome from rotting. Its slow growth makes it easy to maintain, requiring little pruning, and its tough leaves are resistant to damage and algae buildup, especially in shaded areas with moderate water flow.

This plant is perfect as a midground or focal piece, offering shelter for small fish and invertebrates. It tolerates low light and fluctuating water parameters, making it ideal for beginner aquarists. While it is not a fast grower, its longevity and durability more than make up for its slower pace.

Interesting Fact: Anubias barteri "Broadleaf" can grow both submerged and emersed. When grown emersed, its leaves become thicker and waxier, a natural adaptation to the humid and shaded conditions along the riverbanks where it is commonly found.
