The Black Neon Tetra is a peaceful and hardy freshwater fish with a sleek, black body highlighted by iridescent white and greenish stripes. Native to the slow-moving rivers and streams of South America, particularly in Brazil and Paraguay, this species is a favorite for community aquariums due to its elegant appearance, schooling behavior, and ease of care.
- Size: 1.5 inches
- Lifespan: 4-5 years
- Temperament: Peaceful, social
- Group/Solitary: Best kept in groups of 6+
- Food: Omnivorous; flake food, micro-pellets, live/frozen foods (daphnia, brine shrimp)
- Water Requirements: 72-78°F, pH 5.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard water
Black Neon Tetras are native to the blackwater tributaries of the Amazon Basin, where the water is stained with tannins from decaying plant material. These natural conditions are low in pH and soft in hardness, which can be replicated in aquariums with the use of driftwood and leaf litter. A densely planted tank with open swimming areas is ideal for these tetras, as they enjoy darting around in schools while taking shelter among the foliage. They are a schooling fish and should be kept in groups of six or more, which helps them feel secure and display their best colors.
As omnivores, Black Neon Tetras thrive on a varied diet of high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and occasional live or frozen treats like brine shrimp and daphnia. They are compatible with a wide range of peaceful community fish, such as rasboras, corydoras, and smaller gouramis, making them a versatile choice for mixed-species tanks. Regular water changes and stable conditions are essential for maintaining their health and vibrant coloration.
Interesting Fact: Despite their name, Black Neon Tetras are not directly related to the classic Neon Tetra. Their name comes from their shimmering green and white stripes, which resemble the iridescent glow of their more famous cousins but set against a striking black body.
