The Bleeding Heart Tetra is a striking freshwater fish known for its distinctive red “heart-shaped” marking near the center of its body. Native to the slow-moving rivers and streams of the Amazon Basin in South America, this peaceful and social species is a popular choice for aquariums due to its unique appearance and vibrant personality.
- Size: 2-3 inches
- Lifespan: 5-7 years
- Temperament: Peaceful, semi-active
- Group/Solitary: Best kept in groups of 6+
- Food: Omnivorous; flake food, micro-pellets, live/frozen foods (bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp)
- Water Requirements: 72-80°F, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard water
Bleeding Heart Tetras are native to blackwater habitats where tannins from decaying plant material create soft, slightly acidic water conditions. In aquariums, they thrive in setups that mimic their natural environment, with plenty of live plants, driftwood, and shaded areas. A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended to provide enough space for a school of six or more, which helps reduce stress and encourages their natural schooling behavior.
These tetras are omnivorous and enjoy a varied diet of high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp. Their diet helps maintain their health and enhances the red markings and shimmering silver of their body. Compatible with other peaceful species, Bleeding Heart Tetras make excellent additions to community tanks, though their semi-active nature may intimidate very shy tankmates.
Interesting Fact: The “bleeding heart” marking of this tetra intensifies during courtship and in optimal tank conditions, making it not just a defining characteristic but also a visual indicator of their health and happiness.
