The Blue Paradise Gourami is a stunning freshwater fish known for its iridescent blue and red-striped body, flowing fins, and unique personality. Native to the slow-moving rivers and rice paddies of East Asia, including China, Taiwan, and Vietnam, this hardy species is prized for its striking coloration and labyrinth organ, which allows it to breathe air directly from the surface.

Temperament: Semi-aggressive, territorial
Group/Solitary: Best kept singly or in a well-structured tank with peaceful tankmates
Food: Omnivorous; high-quality flakes, pellets, live/frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia)
Water Requirements: 68-82°F, pH 6.0-8.0, soft to moderately hard water

Care Instructions

Blue Paradise Gouramis thrive in well-maintained aquariums with soft substrate, moderate water flow, and plenty of hiding spots created by driftwood, smooth rocks, and live plants. A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended for a single fish, with additional space needed for multiple individuals or community setups.

Since they are labyrinth fish, they require access to the water surface for breathing. Floating plants and gentle lighting help create a comfortable environment and reduce stress. Regular water changes are essential to keep their vibrant colors and overall health.

Their diet should include high-quality flakes or pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Feeding small amounts once or twice a day supports their active metabolism and helps maintain their bright coloration.

Blue Paradise Gouramis can be territorial, especially toward other gouramis and similarly shaped fish. They pair well with peaceful, fast-moving species like tetras, danios, and rasboras but should not be housed with slow-moving or long-finned fish that may be harassed.

Fun Fact: The Blue Paradise Gourami was one of the first tropical fish introduced to the aquarium hobby, dating back to the 19th century!
