Care Instructions
Bolivian Rams inhabit shallow rivers, streams, and floodplains with sandy substrates and abundant vegetation. In aquariums, they thrive in a well-planted setup with a soft substrate to accommodate their bottom-dwelling habits. Include driftwood, caves, and rocks to provide hiding spots and create natural territorial boundaries. A tank size of at least 20 gallons is recommended for a pair or a single fish, with larger tanks required for groups.
These cichlids are omnivorous and enjoy a varied diet of high-quality pellets or granules, live or frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp, and occasional blanched vegetables such as zucchini or spinach. Feeding a balanced diet supports their health and brings out their subtle coloration.
Bolivian Rams are peaceful and compatible with other calm, non-aggressive tankmates, such as tetras, rasboras, and corydoras. While they are generally non-confrontational, they may exhibit mild territorial behavior during breeding. If breeding is desired, provide flat stones or caves for egg-laying and maintain stable water conditions.
Fun Fact: Bolivian Rams are known for their expressive personalities and gentle nature. Unlike many cichlids, they are less prone to aggression, making them an excellent choice for beginner aquarists seeking a colorful, low-maintenance centerpiece fish.
