The Bumblebee Goby is a small, strikingly patterned fish named for its bold black and yellow bands, resembling a bumblebee. Native to the brackish and freshwater environments of Southeast Asia, these gobies are known for their quirky behavior and territorial nature, making them a unique addition to specialized community tanks. They are best suited for experienced aquarists due to their specific care requirements.

- Size: 1-1.5 inches
- Lifespan: 3-4 years
- Temperament: Territorial, peaceful with non-aggressive species
- Group/Solitary: Can be kept in small groups or singly
- Food: Carnivorous, live/frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia)
- Water Requirements: 72-82°F, pH 7.0-8.5, prefers slightly brackish water

Bumblebee Gobies thrive in well-maintained tanks that replicate their natural brackish water habitats. They require a slightly brackish setup (a mix of freshwater and saltwater) to remain healthy, though they can survive in freshwater tanks if the water quality is pristine. These gobies are territorial, especially with their own kind, so providing hiding spots with rocks, caves, and driftwood is essential to minimize aggression. Despite their size, they are carnivorous and prefer live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. They may not accept flake or pellet food readily, so offering a variety of live or frozen foods is important to ensure they get proper nutrition. Bumblebee Gobies are best kept with peaceful, non-aggressive species that won’t outcompete them for food.

Bumblebee Gobies are native to the brackish coastal waters, estuaries, and slow-moving rivers of Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand. They prefer environments with plenty of cover and areas to stake out their own territory. Their unique black-and-yellow coloration provides camouflage in murky, tannin-rich waters where they often dwell.

Fun Fact: Despite their bold, territorial behavior, Bumblebee Gobies are notorious for their ability to “perch” on tank décor, often sitting motionless on rocks or plants while watching their surroundings—a behavior not common among most fish.
