Description & Care Guide:
The Electric Blue Acara is a vibrant freshwater cichlid known for its stunning electric blue coloration that intensifies with proper care, making it one of the most eye-catching species in the aquarium trade. This peaceful yet territorial fish is an excellent choice for intermediate aquarists, as it can be somewhat aggressive during breeding but remains calm in non-breeding conditions. The Electric Blue Acara is ideal for a species-specific tank or a well-planned community tank with larger, non-aggressive fish. They thrive in well-planted aquariums with plenty of hiding spots and swimming space.

  • Difficulty Level: Moderate

  • Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons

  • Food Requirements: Omnivorous – accepts a variety of foods, including high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms

  • Temperament: Peaceful, but territorial, especially during breeding; best kept with similarly sized, non-aggressive species

  • Water Parameters: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.5 - 7.5), temperatures between 74-82°F (23-28°C)

  • Full Grown Size: 6-8 inches (15-20 cm)

Wild Habitats/Origins:
Native to the slow-moving rivers and lakes of Central America, particularly in countries like Honduras, Panama, and Costa Rica, the Electric Blue Acara inhabits clear, tropical waters with moderate to low currents. They prefer environments with plenty of submerged vegetation, rocks, and hiding spots, where they can graze on small invertebrates and organic matter. These conditions in the wild mimic those found in well-maintained aquariums, providing a stable environment for the species.

Fun Fact:
The Electric Blue Acara's striking color is a result of selective breeding, which has enhanced its already beautiful appearance. The electric blue hues are most vivid in males, especially during the breeding season, adding an extra layer of beauty to the aquarium.
