Endler’s Livebearer is a small, colorful freshwater fish known for its iridescent patterns and energetic swimming. Native to the warm, vegetated lagoons and streams of Venezuela, this species is closely related to guppies and is a favorite among aquarists for its hardiness, prolific breeding, and vibrant appearance.
- Size: 1-1.5 inches (males smaller than females)
- Lifespan: 2-3 years
- Temperament: Peaceful, active
- Group/Solitary: Best kept in groups (3+ males, 2+ females per male if breeding)
- Food: Omnivorous; flake food, micro-pellets, live/frozen foods (daphnia, brine shrimp)
- Water Requirements: 72-80°F, pH 7.0-8.0, hard water
Endler’s Livebearers are native to the warm, alkaline waters of the Paria Peninsula in Venezuela, where they inhabit densely vegetated lagoons and streams. In aquariums, they thrive in setups with live plants such as Java Moss or Anubias, which provide hiding spots and enhance water quality. A 10-gallon tank is suitable for a small group, but larger tanks are recommended if breeding. Endler’s are prolific breeders, and if both sexes are kept together, expect a steady population growth.
These fish are omnivorous and require a balanced diet to maintain their health and coloration. High-quality flakes or micro-pellets serve as staples, supplemented with live or frozen treats like brine shrimp, bloodworms, or daphnia. They are highly active and thrive in community tanks with other peaceful, similarly sized species but should not be housed with aggressive or larger fish that might intimidate them.
Fun Fact: Unlike many other livebearers, Endler’s Livebearers retain their vivid coloration even in the wild, where males sport bright patterns to attract mates despite the increased visibility to predators. This makes them one of the most naturally colorful species in the hobby.
