The Fahaka Puffer, also known as the Nile Puffer or Lineatus Puffer, is a large and impressive freshwater fish recognized for its striking patterns and bold personality. Native to the freshwater basins of Africa, this highly territorial species is best suited for experienced aquarists who can provide a spacious tank and specialized care.

  • Size: Up to 18 inches
  • Lifespan: 10-15 years
  • Temperament: Highly aggressive, territorial
  • Group/Solitary: Best kept solitary
  • Food: Carnivorous; snails, mussels, shrimp, crayfish, live/frozen foods
  • Water Requirements: 75-82°F, pH 7.0-8.0, soft to moderately hard water

Fahaka Puffers are native to the Nile River and other large water systems in Africa, where they inhabit slow-moving waters with plenty of vegetation and sandy substrates. In captivity, they require a minimum tank size of 120 gallons due to their large size and active swimming habits. Decor should include smooth rocks, driftwood, and open spaces for swimming. A sandy substrate is ideal to mimic their natural environment and prevent injury to their soft underbellies. Powerful filtration is essential to maintain water quality, as Fahaka Puffers are messy eaters.

As obligate carnivores, Fahaka Puffers have a strong need for hard-shelled foods like snails, mussels, and crayfish to help wear down their continuously growing teeth. Without these, their teeth can overgrow, leading to health issues. Supplement their diet with shrimp, squid, and other protein-rich foods. Feeding them whole, shelled prey not only meets their dietary needs but also provides enrichment.

Due to their aggressive and territorial nature, Fahaka Puffers are best kept alone. They will not tolerate tankmates, as they are known to attack and injure other fish, even those much larger than themselves. This solitary nature does not detract from their appeal, as their interactive and curious behavior makes them fascinating pets.

Fun Fact: Fahaka Puffers are incredibly intelligent and can recognize their owners, often begging for food and interacting with their environment in playful ways. Their sharp beaks and strong jaws allow them to crack open hard shells, a skill they use expertly in the wild and in captivity.
