The Melini Corydoras is a small, peaceful bottom-dwelling catfish known for its distinctive black "saddle" stripe that runs diagonally from its dorsal fin to the base of its tail. Native to the soft, tannin-rich waters of the Rio Meta and Rio Vaupés in Colombia and Brazil, this hardy species is popular among aquarists for its gentle nature and helpful tank-cleaning habits.

Size: 2-2.5 inches
Lifespan: 4-5 years
Temperament: Peaceful, social
Group/Solitary: Best kept in groups of 5 or more
Food: Omnivorous; sinking pellets, algae wafers, live/frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia)
Water Requirements: 72-78°F, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard water

Care Instructions

Melini Corydoras thrive in well-maintained aquariums with soft substrate, such as sand or fine gravel, to protect their sensitive barbels while foraging. A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended for a small group. Include plenty of hiding spots using driftwood, smooth rocks, and plants to replicate their natural environment and reduce stress.

They are highly social and prefer the company of their own kind. Keeping them in groups of five or more encourages natural behavior and helps them feel secure. Gentle filtration and low to moderate water flow are ideal to mimic their natural river habitat.

Melini Corydoras are bottom feeders and should be offered a varied diet of sinking pellets, algae wafers, and live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Feeding them after lights out ensures they get enough food without competition from mid-water and top-dwelling tankmates.

These peaceful catfish are ideal for community tanks, pairing well with small, non-aggressive species like tetras, rasboras, and dwarf gouramis. Avoid housing them with larger or aggressive fish that could bully them.

Fun Fact: Melini Corydoras use their barbels to search for food in the substrate, which makes them excellent tank cleaners!
