Though long associated with the aquarium trade in Eastern Europe, this species originates from fast-flowing streams and ponds in Myanmar, where it thrives in well-oxygenated waters surrounded by dense vegetation. Its combination of bold coloration, active schooling behavior, and hardy nature makes it a favorite for planted community aquariums.

In nature, Odessa Barbs inhabit small rivers, streams, and flooded fields in Myanmar, often found in areas with submerged roots, aquatic plants, and moderate current. These environments provide ample insect larvae, algae, and detritus, supporting their omnivorous feeding habits.
