The Odessa Barb is a vibrant, energetic freshwater species named for the brilliant red stripe that flashes along the males’ sides, creating one of the most striking displays among small schooling fish. Though long associated with the aquarium trade in Eastern Europe, this species originates from fast-flowing streams and ponds in Myanmar, where it thrives in well-oxygenated waters surrounded by dense vegetation. Its combination of bold coloration, active schooling behavior, and hardy nature makes it a favorite for planted community aquariums.

  • Size: 2-2.5 inches

  • Lifespan: 3-5 years

  • Temperament: Peaceful, active

  • Group/Solitary: Best kept in groups of 6+

  • Food: Omnivorous, high-quality flakes or pellets, live/frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia

  • Water Requirements: 70-79°F, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderate hardness

Odessa Barbs thrive in well-planted aquariums with plenty of open space for darting and schooling. Their colors become far more intense when kept in larger groups and provided a varied, protein-rich diet. Males display their best reds and contrasting dark bars during courtship or mild sparring, which is completely normal and part of their natural social structure. They mix well with other peaceful, similarly active species, though slow or long-finned tank mates should be chosen carefully to prevent fin nipping. Consistent water changes and good filtration help maintain the clarity and oxygen levels they prefer.

In nature, Odessa Barbs inhabit small rivers, streams, and flooded fields in Myanmar, often found in areas with submerged roots, aquatic plants, and moderate current. These environments provide ample insect larvae, algae, and detritus, supporting their omnivorous feeding habits. Their schooling behavior helps them avoid predators while enhancing communication and courtship within the group.

Fun Fact: Male Odessa Barbs can undergo dramatic color shifts during breeding displays, with the central red stripe intensifying to a fiery crimson that can make an entire school appear to glow in motion.
