The Parkinson’s Rainbowfish is a bold, eye-catching species celebrated for its shimmering silver-blue body, dramatic orange patches near the tail, and deep metallic sheen that intensifies with maturity. Originating from the clear streams and rainforest-fed rivers of Papua New Guinea, this rainbowfish is admired for its graceful schooling behavior and calm temperament, making it an excellent centerpiece for larger planted aquariums. Males develop especially vibrant coloration as they display to one another, creating a dynamic and visually striking community tank presence.

  • Size: 4-5 inches

  • Lifespan: 5-8 years

  • Temperament: Peaceful, active

  • Group/Solitary: Best kept in groups of 6+

  • Food: Omnivorous, high-quality flakes or pellets, spirulina, live/frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms

  • Water Requirements: 74-82°F, pH 6.5-8.0, moderate hardness

Parkinson’s Rainbowfish thrive in spacious, well-oxygenated aquariums with plenty of open swimming room and dense vegetation around the perimeter. Keeping them in groups encourages natural schooling behavior and brings out their brightest colors, especially in dominant males. They are peaceful and mix well with other similarly sized, non-aggressive species. Their diet should be varied, combining a staple of quality pellets or flakes with regular offerings of live or frozen foods to enhance coloration and vigor. These fish prefer stable water conditions with moderate flow and benefit from frequent water changes to maintain clarity and oxygen levels.

In the wild, Parkinson’s Rainbowfish inhabit freshwater systems in Papua New Guinea characterized by clear water, submerged roots, and lush riparian vegetation. Their naturally reflective scales help them communicate within schools while remaining inconspicuous in dappled sunlight. These environments fluctuate seasonally, which contributes to their adaptability in well-maintained aquariums.

Fun Fact: Male Parkinson’s Rainbowfish often flash their vivid tail patches during courtship and dominance displays, creating bursts of orange and blue that shimmer across the tank like moving sparks.
