The Pea Puffer, also known as the Dwarf Puffer, is a tiny, vibrant freshwater fish that packs a big personality. Native to the rivers and lakes of southern India, this highly intelligent species is the smallest pufferfish in the world. Its interactive behavior, striking colors, and manageable size make it a favorite among aquarists, particularly for nano tanks.

Pea Puffers are native to densely vegetated, slow-moving waters in India, where they feed on small invertebrates. In aquariums, they thrive in setups with plenty of live plants such as Java Fern, Anubias, and mosses, which provide cover and reduce territorial aggression. A minimum tank size of 5 gallons is suitable for a single Pea Puffer, with an additional 3-5 gallons per additional fish. Gentle filtration and stable water parameters are critical for their health.

These puffers are carnivores and require a diet of protein-rich live or frozen foods. Small snails are a favorite, as they provide a natural way to keep their beaks trimmed. Feeding small portions multiple times a day ensures proper nutrition and prevents leftover food from fouling the water.

Pea Puffers are territorial and may exhibit aggressive behaviors, such as nipping fins, especially in overcrowded tanks or when improperly paired with other species. If kept with tankmates, choose fast-moving, non-aggressive fish that can tolerate similar water conditions, but a species-specific tank is often the safest choice.

Fun Fact: Despite their small size, Pea Puffers have excellent eyesight and can recognize their owners. They are known for their curious and playful behavior, often following their owners along the tank glass, making them as interactive as they are captivating.
