The Bushy Nose Pleco, is a striking and unique algae-eater known for its distinct “bushy” tentacles on its nose, especially in males. Native to the rivers and streams of South America, this peaceful bottom-dweller is hardy, easy to care for, and well-suited to community tanks. Its gentle temperament and helpful algae-cleaning habits make it an asset in planted and freshwater aquariums.
- Size: 4-6 inches
- Lifespan: 5-8 years
- Temperament: Peaceful, territorial when breeding
- Group/Solitary: Best kept singly or in pairs (especially in smaller tanks)
- Food: Herbivorous, sinking algae wafers, fresh vegetables (zucchini, cucumber), occasional protein-based food (bloodworms)
- Water Requirements: 72-82°F, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard water
Bushy Nose Plecos are primarily nocturnal and spend much of their time hiding during the day, so providing caves, driftwood, and plant cover will create a secure environment. They are efficient algae-eaters but should be supplemented with sinking algae wafers, fresh vegetables like zucchini or cucumber, and occasional protein foods. While peaceful, they may become territorial with other bottom-dwellers, particularly if breeding. Males have a unique array of “bushy” tentacles on their noses, which they use to attract females. A tank with good filtration and moderate water flow replicates their natural environment, and regular water changes help maintain optimal water quality.
In the wild, these plecos inhabit shaded, slow-moving rivers and streams with ample hiding places among rocks and roots. They are adapted to graze on algae and biofilm along surfaces, which helps keep the aquarium clean while reducing algae growth.
Fun Fact: Male Bushy Nose Plecos are responsible parents, often guarding the eggs in a secure location until they hatch and continue to protect the fry for a short period after hatching, showing a high level of parental care among fish.
