Description & Care Guide:
The Red Chromide is a vibrant and colorful freshwater fish that features a striking red to orange body with a distinctive darker stripe running along its midline. Known for its territorial nature, this species is often a standout in aquariums due to its bright colors and unique shape. Red Chromides are best kept in species-specific tanks or with other robust, similarly-sized fish. While they are hardy, they require clean, well-oxygenated water and a tank setup that includes plenty of hiding places and a sandy substrate for burrowing.

  • Difficulty Level: Moderate

  • Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons

  • Food Requirements: Omnivorous – eats flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and small crustaceans

  • Temperament: Territorial, especially during breeding; should be kept with similarly sized, non-aggressive fish

  • Water Parameters: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.5 - 7.5), temperatures between 75-82°F (24-28°C)

  • Full Grown Size: 4-6 inches (10-15 cm)

Wild Habitats/Origins:
Native to the brackish waters of India and Sri Lanka, the Red Chromide is typically found in rivers, estuaries, and lagoons, where freshwater and saltwater mix. These environments provide a mix of plants, rocks, and sandy or muddy substrates, which the Red Chromide uses for hiding and nesting. In the wild, these fish inhabit shallow, calm waters with low to moderate currents, preferring slightly brackish conditions.

Fun Fact:
The Red Chromide is one of the few species of cichlids that thrive in brackish water, making it a fascinating and adaptable addition to both freshwater and brackish aquariums.
