Care Instructions
Red Eye Tetras are native to slow-moving streams, ponds, and rivers in South America, where they thrive in densely vegetated waters. In aquariums, they prefer a setup with plenty of open swimming space, a soft substrate, and some plants or driftwood for cover. A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended for a school of six or more, as they are social fish that exhibit their best behavior and coloration in groups.
These tetras are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet of high-quality flakes or micro-pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, or daphnia. Their active nature makes them enthusiastic feeders, so ensure a balanced diet to maintain their health and vibrant appearance.
Red Eye Tetras are peaceful and compatible with a wide range of tankmates, including other tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and small gouramis. Their active schooling behavior adds dynamic movement to the aquarium, making them an engaging addition to community setups. Regular water changes and stable water parameters are essential for their long-term health.
Fun Fact: The vibrant red eyes of this species are thought to help them identify each other in their natural habitats, particularly in darker or murky waters. This distinctive feature also makes them stand out beautifully in planted aquariums.
