Rotala Nanjenshan is a delicate and highly attractive freshwater aquarium plant, prized for its fine, needle-like leaves and lush, bushy appearance. This plant’s soft green to reddish tones make it a standout feature in aquascapes, particularly in high-tech setups. Native to Taiwan, it is ideal for experienced aquarists due to its demanding care requirements for light, nutrients, and CO2.

  • Type: Stem plant
  • Size: 8-20 inches tall
  • Light: High (8-10 hours daily)
  • Substrate: Nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs recommended
  • CO2: Strongly recommended for optimal growth and color
  • Water Requirements: 72-82°F, pH 5.5-7.5, soft, slightly acidic water
  • Growth Rate: Moderate to fast

Rotala Nanjenshan thrives under high light and CO2 injection, which encourage its dense, vibrant growth and bring out reddish hues in its leaves. In lower light or without CO2, its growth becomes slower and leggy, and its vibrant coloration may fade. Frequent trimming is required to maintain its compact, bushy appearance and prevent overgrowth. This plant absorbs nutrients both from its roots and the water column, so a nutrient-rich substrate and regular liquid fertilizers are necessary for healthy growth.

Rotala Nanjenshan is best suited for midground or background placement in aquascapes, where its soft, flowing foliage creates depth and movement. It pairs well with other colorful or textured plants to build dynamic, layered aquascapes. Propagation is easy—simply trim healthy stems and replant them in the substrate.

Interesting Fact: Rotala Nanjenshan’s delicate, feathery leaves are highly sensitive to water conditions, making it a natural indicator of tank health. Poor growth or fading colors often signal issues with lighting, CO2 levels, or water quality, helping aquarists maintain optimal conditions.
