The Spotted Congo Puffer is a unique and highly sought-after freshwater pufferfish known for its golden-yellow body adorned with dark spots. Native to the slow-moving rivers of the Congo Basin in Central Africa, this species is prized for its relatively peaceful nature compared to other puffers, making it a more compatible choice for carefully curated community tanks.

  • Size: 3-4 inches
  • Lifespan: 8-10 years
  • Temperament: Peaceful compared to other puffers, semi-aggressive when territorial
  • Group/Solitary: Best kept singly or in species-only tanks, or with very carefully selected tankmates
  • Food: Carnivorous; live/frozen foods (snails, shrimp, bloodworms, mussels)
  • Water Requirements: 75-80°F, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard water

Spotted Congo Puffers are found in slow-moving rivers and streams with sandy and rocky substrates, where they hunt for small invertebrates. In aquariums, they thrive in tanks with a sandy substrate, smooth rocks, driftwood, and live plants that offer enrichment and hiding spots. A minimum of 30 gallons is recommended for a single puffer, with good filtration to maintain pristine water quality. They prefer calm waters and may become stressed in tanks with strong currents.

As carnivores, Spotted Congo Puffers require a diet rich in live or frozen foods, such as snails, shrimp, and mussels, to help wear down their continuously growing teeth. Variety is important to keep them healthy and engaged, as they enjoy chasing live prey. Supplement their diet with occasional treats like bloodworms or clams.

Despite being one of the more peaceful puffer species, they can still be territorial and nip at tankmates, so careful consideration is needed when housing them with other fish. Ideally, they should be kept in species-specific tanks or with fast-moving, peaceful fish that can tolerate similar water parameters.

Interesting Fact: The Spotted Congo Puffer is one of the few freshwater puffers that does not inflate unless under extreme stress, which is a natural defense mechanism they prefer not to use in captivity. Their curious and interactive nature makes them popular "pet-like" fish among aquarists.
