Care Instructions
Zebra Loaches thrive in well-maintained aquariums with a soft sand or fine gravel substrate to protect their delicate barbels while foraging. A tank of at least 30 gallons is recommended for a small group. Adding driftwood, smooth rocks, and live plants creates natural hiding spots and helps reduce stress.
They are highly social and should be kept in groups of at least five, as they exhibit natural schooling and social behavior when housed together. Without enough companions, they may become shy or withdrawn.
A varied diet is essential for their health and coloration. Offer high-quality sinking pellets or wafers, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They also graze on algae and will naturally help keep the tank clean of snails. Feeding once or twice a day in small amounts helps maintain their health.
Zebra Loaches are peaceful and get along well with other small, non-aggressive fish such as tetras, rasboras, and corydoras. However, avoid housing them with very slow-moving or long-finned fish, as they may occasionally nip at fins.
Fun Fact: Zebra Loaches are highly effective at controlling snail populations, often hunting them down and eating them, making them a natural solution for tanks with snail infestations!
